National Workshop on Financial Involvement in Carbon Trading and CDM Investment

In 2005, the Government of Rwanda mandated Rwanda Environment Management Authority (REMA) to stand as the Designated National Authority (DNA) to watch over Clean Development Mechanism Projects under Kyoto Protocol in Rwanda (for more detail: www.rema.gov.rw/dna). It is in that regard that from 12th to 13th of May 2011 at Lemigo Hotel, REMA through its DNA Permanent Secretariat in collaboration with UNEP Risoe Centre carried out a capacity building seminar entitled:"National Workshop Training on Financial Involvement in Carbon Trading and Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) Investment".

Presenters to this workshop training were Nationals and experts from oversees: Jean NTAZINDA (Project Manager, CDM-DNA/REMA), Viateur MUGIRANEZA (CFLs Project Manager, EWSA), Dr. Todd NGARA (Program Assistant, UNEP Risoe Centre, Danmark), Dr. Soren LUTKEN ( Senior CDM Advisor, UNEP Risoe), Dr. Gregor Kochaniewicz (Auditor,TUV NORD), Ms. Josefin Hedbrandh (Carbon Asset Climate Corporation Emission GmbH), Mr. Glenn Hodes (Senior Economist, Africa Carbon Asset Development-ACAD-Facility) and Bill Farmer (Chairman, Uganda Carbon Bureau Ltd).

Addressing a 50 people audience composed of bankers (Bank of Kigali, Banque Commercial du Rwanda-BCR, Banque de Development du Rwanda-BRD, Urwego Opportunity Bank), investors (Tea Factories, Bralirwa), and Environmental stakeholders (National Land Center, National Forestry Authority, Institut de Recherches Agronomiques du Rwanda-ISAR) as well as Government representatives;

Dr. Rose MUKANKOMEJE, DG/REMA reminded participants that Government of Rwanda is investing in achieving a sustainable development. She mentioned that Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) under Kyoto protocol is an opportunity for Rwanda project developers as it can bring extra-revenues to their income from usual business.

After the workshop activities, participants revealed that they have gained much from presenters. Bankers committed themselves to encourage their clients to apply usual business to CDM process whereas ISAR mentioned that it is important to promote species that are much carbon dioxide consumers so that project developers in forestry sector can generate important Certified Emission Reductions (CERs

In her closing remarks, DG of REMA expressed her gratitude to the presenters for their time and for sharing their good knowledge in CDM project development and Carbon trading. She promised trainees a continuous support in promoting their efforts towards a clean and sustainable development. The workshop was officially closed on Friday, the 13th May 2011.
