Second registered project

Second CDM project registered in Rwanda

Climate change is occurring worldwide and will significantly impact Rwanda.  Climate change can be mitigated by reducing greenhouse gas emissions.  The carbon market is a mechanism which financially rewards projects that reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.  The carbon market provides project developers with an extra revenue stream for their projects while assuring sustainable development in the project host country, once the projects are operating.  Projects that could be eligible include:
• Renewable energy (e.g. Hydro, Biogas, Solar electricity, Solar water heaters),
• Biomass waste usage
• Afforestation/Reforestation,
• Energy efficiency (e.g. use of: Improved cook stoves and Economic lamps).

The second registered project is: Rwanda Natural Energy Project: "Water Treatment Systems for Rural Rwanda (Shyira and Fawe)" was officially registered on 25 March 2011 by the UNFCCC. This project is implemented by Manna Energy Ltd. Average estimated Certified Emissions Reduction (CERs) volume (tCO2e/yr): 6,000 Crediting period (years):10

The first carbon market project in Rwanda was officially registered with the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) on 30 May 2010.  This is the "Rwanda Electrogaz Compact Fluorescent Lamp (CFL) distribution project" which benefits customers providing by them high quality, low price CFLs, thereby reducing their electricity consumption and their bills. The project is implemented by the Rwanda Electricity Corporation (RECO) with assistance from the World Bank. The project will result in emissions reductions of approximately 18,500 tonnes of CO2 per year resulting in extra revenue of $150,000 - $220,000 per year.
The registration of these projects demonstrates the feasibility of Carbon market Projects in Rwanda and both public and private investors are encouraged to get involved in this new business opportunity that is environmental friendly.
